Where Do I Start?

Welcome to the California Career Resource Network, the following resources can help you provide your students with a head start on choosing life career goals that work for them!

Begin with a Self-Assessment

The California CareerZone has three assessment activities that your students can use to identify their interests and see how those interests relate to a variety of occupations. The California CareerZone Workbook (PDF, 640 KB) can be your student’s tool to guide them through the CareerZone and to keep track of their discoveries along the way.

If students have already identified occupations that interest them they can jump right into exploring Industry Sectors on the California CareerZone, with information on over 900 occupations including: Job Definition, Interests, Tasks, Skills, Knowledge, Education, School Classes, Wages, Outlook, Similar Jobs, and Job Openings.

Discover how much will it cost to live as an independent adult

California Reality Check enables students to explore how much money will be needed to maintain the lifestyle of their choosing and links income to their choice of education levels and specific occupations.

Need a simple tool for career goal setting?

The California CareerZone Workbook (PDF, 640 KB) includes a Career Goal Worksheet that can serve as a tool for helping students plan for their high school education and/or identify post secondary goals, whether college or career.

Create A Career Action Plan

The California Career Planning Guide, second edition contains all the steps and information students will need to develop a Career Action Plan. The guide is available online for free or low cost hard copies can be purchased. A detailed list of online resources are also available for each section of the guide.

Take a road trip

Since 2002 college students have been criss-crossing the USA interviewing people of interest to discover how they got to where they are. The Roadtrip Nation web site includes more than 700 interviews and How-To’s for cold calling, interviewing and filming.

Explore college options

The WhoDoUWant2B web site uses videos of community college students to inform students about career technical education as an option for both high school and community college course work.

CaliforniaColleges.edu has information about all three California public college systems, Community Colleges, California State University and University of California. Learn about requirements for admission, program options, and more.

If you want to learn about schools outside of California College Navigator has information about schools all across the United States.

Looking for a classroom curriculum?

The Real Game California (TRGC) is a simulation game based classroom curriculum that actively engages students in discovering how their current school experience relates to their future life work goals. TRGC moves career development from a model where people are expected to pick a perfect occupation for life to a new model where people learn skills to plan and manage their ever-changing careers throughout their lives.

SchoolGuides.org
This site (maintained by the California Counselor Leadership Network) provides continuous updates on important information and resources for students, parents, counselors, teachers, and student support staff.
